Play is a very large part of any Mastiff puppy's early life. But were you aware that playtime can also be learning time as well? There are three basic things that a Mastiff puppy - even one as young as six weeks old - needs to start learning. And it's easy. Dogs, even puppies, are adept at recognizing tone of voice. When they learn to associate a displeased, forceful tone of voice with the word no, you will not in the future have to be so forceful in your utterances. But first you do have to get his attention. When the Mastiff pup does something wrong, simply pick him up, gain eye contact and tell him very firmly, "No." It will get an immediate reaction. Depending on your pup's personality, he will drop his head and become sheepish, growl or attempt to talk you out of it by asking you to play. If either of the latter two happens, you will have to repeat the command to show that you are not kidding.

Then, simply let it go. Put the pup down and keep a watchful eye on his response. A rebellious pup may repeat the action as a way to test you, in which case you need to repeat the process. Be gentle, but be firm and consistent and your pup should get the message.

As for the other things that your baby needs to know, you will probably default to teaching him the proper way to go potty. This is actually easier than you might think, as pups are a lot smarter than they look. Timing is, however, everything. If you notice a puddle on the floor and your pup has since gone off to play with his ball, the only thing you can do is clean it up and watch him more closely. Don't rub his nose in it, or he will simply be hurt and confused. What you want to do is catch him in the act. Anytime you see him getting ready to tinkle, quickly pick him up and take him outside. Chances are he will be so shocked that he will save some for the yard, and when he goes there you can praise him lavishly.

The third thing that your Mastiff pup needs to know is that he should never put his teeth on a human being. This is a tough one, as it is so much fun to play "bite" with a youngster. But you don't want them to play so rough when they are older. So when you play with him, be sure to do so with toys that are okay for him to bite. If he bites when you are trying to pet him, tell him no and give him his toy or put his toy right in his mouth. If he keeps trying, you should pick him up and tell him no. Sure you put the crunchy kibble in the bowl every morning and every now and then your doggums gets a treat of the gourmet, wet dog food, but what about treats? What are the best treats for the only member of the family that actually will work to deserve them most of the time? Unless the vet specifically says no to treats because your dog has gone from canine to porcine, then a treat can be a special reward for a job well done, or just a way to share a few extra special moments with the pup you love.

As always remember safety first: never feed your dog chocolate, grapes, nuts, (especially macadamia). Table scraps are not the best idea for Rover unless your meal is all natural and healthy to begin with. I once worked with a man whose little Chihuahua actually loved to eat frozen peas- we checked with the vet and he said as long as it did not upset his little tummy, they were fine for him. Make treats a special thing by only providing them every now and then, and never use them as a reward for behaviors that are mandatory anyway. Tricks are not a normal part of a dog's behavior and some of them will stubbornly refuse to learn any at all, it is a matter of individual drive and determination on dog and owner alike.

Dogs get bored with the same old food over and over, just as we would, so they do need some variety in their diets. Treats should be healthy as well as good tasting, and part of the overall meal plan set up by the vet. Treats come in many types, and it is important to realize that your dog does not need a treat with every single meal- they should be occasional (hence the name, "treat") To be safe, make sure whichever type of treat you give to your dog is the right size for him. It might seem amusing to see a pocket pet sized dog carrying a T-Rex sized bone, but it is frustrating for him and might be dangerous. Do not put your dog in danger for your own amusement!

Soft treats come in many shapes and sizes, so again, make sure you are giving the right size for your dog. The dog gets the satisfaction of lying down for a good long chew, and you can breathe a bit easier that they will not splinter or shatter like real bones. The extended time it takes to chew through them may make them good for the dog's teeth, but be aware that they can pose a choking hazard if your dog tends to gulp and swallow things. I Am A Dog

I am an animal.  I am a dog.  I am your dog. I am a certain breed of dog.  I am your pet.  As your pet, you have given me a name.
 
Animal:  First and foremost I am an animal.  I have animal instincts and animal attributes. If you do not allow me to be an animal, you are putting me into an unnatural state of being.  Or, as Cesar Millan says, you are putting me out of my natural balance.  You really need to allow me to be what I am supposed to be according to nature.  Mother Nature herself!
 
Dog: I am also a dog, and as a dog I also have certain attributes.  One of them is:  I travel in packs.  My pack has a leader and I am a follower, (unless I am the dog pack leader that is).  Otherwise I follow. It comes natural to me.
 
That is why you, as the family members, need to pick up the role of pack leader.  I mean, if none of you do it, I have to do it.  And, I really don't even want to.  Although some of my other canine friends really do love being the leader. I am a golden, and I love to be social, lovable and I love to follow.
 
As a dog in the pack no one calls me by name.  The pack leader does not correct me by giving me lectures, by threatening me, or by yelling at me.  The pack leader will normally "bite" me to get my attention.   But mostly, as followers in the pack, we know instinctively what to do and what not to do.
 
- We let the pack leader eat first.
- We let the pack leader choose the way, we follow, we don't run ahead, run way off to the side, and we follow.
- In nature, we move forward, we move ahead.  Hence, we need lots of walks, not ambling along, but real walks.
 
These are just some of the things we do as pack members.  We also respect our leader.  That's why you need to teach us to respect you.  Dogs can love their humans without respecting them.  If you don't act as leader, you won't get the respect.
 
I am also a specific breed of dog.   It is very important that you study the breed of dog you have.  That way you will discover what their "purpose" was meant to be. What genes do they have cursing through their body?  What comes naturally to them? What do they love doing?  What were they bred to do?
 
Example:  I am a retriever.  So, guess what I am bred to do?  Retrieve!  Yes, I do not hunt, in the sense of stalking and killing my prey.  I retrieve what my trainer has taught me to retrieve.  And, I do it so naturally. I love to do it; that is why I love playing ball so much.
 
So when you come home, and I run to grab something to put in my mouth to greet you with, well, that's what I do.  I want to meet you with something in my mouth.  So, if you don't want me to take what is yours, make sure I have something of mine I can grab.
 
That's what I mean.  You need to develop the breed part in your dog!  Allow your dogs to grow within their own nature.  You may have a working dog, a watch dog, toy dog, there are so many.  But, find out how your dog wants to behave, and then help it to become what it should be.
 
You will have a much happier and well balanced dog.
 
Lastly, I am your pet.  I have a name.  Did you know that over 70% of the dogs really don't even know their names?  Owners just think they do.  As a dog, I respond to your tone of voice, to repetition, to habit.  Before you assume your dog knows its name, test your dog.
 
And as a pet you have socialized me.  That means I now need to learn how to behave over and above my natural instincts.  It is your duty to teach me how to be social.
 
Don't let me run around and bark at random; the neighbours will hate me.  I don't want that.
 
When you walk with me, make me sit off to the side if someone else is going faster and wants to pass us.  Also, recognize the fact that some people are afraid of big dogs, like me.  Make your dog sit and allow these people to admire your dog from a few feet away.  People who are afraid can love dogs; they just want to love them from a bit further away.
 
Don't let you dogs run lose in the park, or anywhere open if you can't call them back.  No dog should be running off leash if they have not learned the recall. 
 
Don't let your dog pull and tug when you stop to talk to someone.  Don't let them jump up or around you.  Make them sit till you are ready to move. 
 
Remember, the more courteous you are the more people will be supportive of dogs and pets in general.  Be a promoter of good faith for dogs.  It's your duty to teach your dog manners in public, or in the home for that matter.
 
When you walk and you see others come towards you, like a stroller, or mommy with small kids, or even someone else walking their unruly dog, go off to the side again, make your dog sit nicely, let the others go by and continue your walk.   It's a great way to gather goodwill for your dog.
 
And lastly, take me for daily walks.  I need them, I love them. And, they keep me healthy and out of trouble!

The commmon question of all new puppy owners is "How big will my puppy get?" To determine puppy growth rate, you have to first consider a lot of variables to ever be able to get an accurate answer for any individual dog breed.  And even then, you will only be able to get an average "puppy growth rate" range...or a "ballpark figure".

But now how does is a person to estimate how big their puppy is going to get?  What you need to know is that puppies at different ages grow at different rates.The same way that dogs of different breeds grow at different rates.This makes it very hard to pin point exactly to the pound, how big your puppy is going to be at one year.And, if it will continue growing larger in the following year.

Determine Puppy Growth Rate

Generally speaking, here is one way to determine puppy growth rate.An adult dog will weigh about twice as much as it did when it was 4 months of age.And the rule of thumb for the giant breeds, your dog is going to double what they weigh at 5 months. 

So, before buying that puppy, a person needs to do their homework on the different breeds of dogs.You need to know if your new dog is going to reach 9, 19 or 109 pounds when grown.You should understand the puppy growth rate on the different dog breeds. 

Different Breeds Grow At Different Rates

An average small breed dog, like a toy poodle will reach full weight by year one, at 8 pounds.A bulldog is expected to reach about 20 pounds at one year, and 35 by their second year.A larger breed dog, such as a german shepherd will reach 70 pounds by year 1, and 75 pounds by year 2.And the largest breeds, like our great dane will reach 110 pounds by year one, and 130 pounds by year two.

But also understand that two male puppies from the same liter can also vary in size, the same way your two brothers can be very different in size.(I'm around 3 inches taller, and 50 pounds lighter than either of my brothers)

What About Genetics

This then tells me, that genetics can also play a big part in puppy growth rate.Daisy, my slender, long legged toy poodle was not suppose to get any larger than her 6 lb pound mother.Instead, she had the genes of her moms sister, and she topped out at eleven pounds.Just accept the fact that puppy growth rate is an average estimate of what your dog will grow up to be.(And I wouldn't think of trading my eleven pound poodle for any six pound poodle in the world.)
